Gervonta Davis

The people closest to four-time world champion Gervonta Davis say he is more focused than ever while preparing for his fight against the WBA super-lightweight champion, Mario Barrios. Davis says the boxing world will see just how focused he is when he steps into the ring on June 26.

Davis expressed respect for his opponent and points out Barrios is undefeated in 26 fights. He says he expects the 140-pound champion to bring the best out of him on fight night.

The most Gervonta Davis has weighed in for a professional fight in the past is 135 pounds. Mario Barrios is a full-blown light welterweight who will weigh more than the 140-pound limit when the bell rings to start the contest with Davis. Barrios’ 5’10” frame will also provide him with a four-inch height advantage. The San Antonio native considered a move to the welterweight division before Davis came calling for a fight.

Gervonta Davis says he has sparred against much larger fighters to prepare for his showdown with Barrios. Davis, who has knocked out 23 of the 24 men already faced in the ring, says he has been “cracking” in sparring. He admits fans will have to wait until fight night to see if the power he showed at smaller weight divisions will carry over against a larger opponent.

Davis says he is more interested in fighting at 130 or 135 pounds in the future. But plans to fight at the weight class that provides him with the best competition.

Gervonta Davis appreciates the support from fans and stars propelling him to the status of PPV star. He also understands the responsibility that comes with this status.

Gervonta Davis says that winning is not enough on June 26. He must also entertain the fans that pay money to see him fight. Davis referred to Floyd Mayweather as an example of a fighter who put on a show each time he stepped into the ring.
