Errol Spence and Yordenis Ugas

Errol Spence and Yordenis Ugas will soon unify three of the four major welterweight boxing titles. The fight was a no-go after the WBA ruled Yordenis must fight next against Eimantas Stanionis. But Stanionis has agreed to step aside to make way for the title unification.

Both Errol Spence and Yordenis Ugas fight for Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Championship. This fact should make it easy to finalize the fight terms. The pay-per-view event will take place sometime in the spring. Organizers have not yet announced the location for the fight.

Yordenis Ugas became the WBA champion in September 2020. Some boxing pundits did not respect Ugas’s title status since he did not win it directly from former belt holder Manny Pacquiao. But when Errol Spence could not fight in a scheduled matchup against Pacquiao due to an eye injury, Ugas replaced him. The Cuban fighter defeated the Filipino boxing legend and secured his spot as the WBA welterweight champion.

Both Spence and Ugas wanted the unification bout for their next fight. But the WBA ruled that Ugas must take part in a four-man tournament. The ruling would make it necessary for Ugas to win two more boxing matches before choosing an opponent.

Stanionis has agreed to fight the other remaining fighter in the tournament, Radzhab Butaev. Their fight will take place on the Spence-Ugas undercard. The Stanionis-Butaev winner may also be in line to fight the Spence-Ugas winner.

“Thanks to the WBA for doing the right thing,” Ugas was grateful for the change of course. “I will be the first Cuban to fight for three belts in one night.”

Errol Spence enters the fight with Ugas with an undefeated record in 27 boxing matches. He currently holds both the WBC and IBF championship belts. The 31-year-old had to pull out of his scheduled fight with Manny Pacquiao due to a torn retina. He is taking the unification bout against Ugas without a tune-up fight.
