Vasiliy Lomachenko put the lightweight division on notice Saturday night by dominating veteran Richard Commey. Lomachenko made his second appearance in the ring since losing his title belts to Teofimo Lopez. His performance against Commey proved he is more than ready for present belt holders George Kambosos and Devin Haney.
Vasiliy Lomachenko showed he was the best fighter from the opening bell. The Matrix used his elite footwork and combination punching to build an early lead. He was able to hurt Commey in the seventh round. At one point, Lomachenko urged Commey’s corner to stop the fight.
Richard Commey showed the hard to withstand the onslaught and go the distance with Lomachenko. But once the fight was complete, there was no controversy with the decision.
The fight result was a unanimous decision for Lomachenko. Two scorecards read 119-108. The final scorecard read 117-110.
“I saw his situation,” Lomachenko said moments after earning his 16th victory in 16 fights. It was very hard for him. That is why I said stop the fight.”
“We have a lot of great fighters in this division,” Lomachenko turned his attention to potential future opponents. “We can organize a lot of great fights.”
Vasiliy Lomachenko Next Fight
The biggest fight out there for Lomachenko is no doubt with George Kambosos. The new champion recently took the three belts Lomachenko once wore from former champion Teofimo Lopez. A victory against Kambosos would return Lomachenko to the top of a list of elite fighters.
Lomachenko could win one of the four major belts by fighting Devin Haney. He has also voiced his desire to avenge his defeat to Lopez, but that fight does not possess the same attraction since Lopez no longer has the belts.
George Kambosos has not committed to any of the big fights available to him. But he does say that Lomachenko is a potential opponent.
For Lomachenko, the mission is unchanged. He is one step closer to the opportunity to prove he is still the best at the lightweight division.
