Terence Crawford seeks to reclaim pound for pound title

Terence Crawford still believes he is the best boxer in the world. He maintains this belief even as the world celebrates Canelo Alvarez’s history-making performance against Caleb Plant. Crawford feels there would be no debate regarding the pound-for-pound title if he could get the fights that would allow him to showcase his skills to fans and media.

Terence Crawford is 37-0 as a professional boxer with 28 credited knockouts. Crawford earned undisputed glory at the 140-pound division before relinquishing the crown to find bigger names at welterweight.

Crawford won the WBO welterweight championship from Jeff Horn in June 2018. But the WBO champ found it a struggle to get a big-name welterweight in the ring. This fact changed when “Showtime” Shawn Porter agreed to fight him on November 20. Crawford admits it has been difficult to watch as everything seemed to fall in line perfectly for Canelo Alvarez.

“He is definitely doing things differently,” Crawford explains, “He has fought four times this year. He has become undisputed.”

Crawford then offers his explanation as to why Canelo’s career at this time is so different from his own. “He is getting all the fights he wants right now. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to.”

Many people believe Crawford will face his toughest challenge to date when he steps into the ring with Shawn Porter. A strong performance against Porter would jumpstart Crawford’s mission to reclaim the pound-for-pound title.

Crawford says his goal for the Porter fight is to remind the boxing world that he is the best boxer on the planet. “I feel like I’m already there, but I have to prove it to the world, and it starts with Porter.”

A victory against Porter may also set up a fight for Crawford with other division champions Errol Spence or Yordenis Ugas. Keith Thurman is another big name Crawford would like to add to his welterweight resume. Jaron Ennis and Vergil Ortiz Jr. would also be big fights for Crawford.

“What’s for me, I will have,” Crawford says regarding his struggles to secure the fights he wants. “Everything happens for a reason, and I feel my time is coming.”
