Ryan Garcia is one of the most popular young boxers competing in the sport today. Earlier this year, some Garcia fans feared the worst when the 22-year-old announced he would take a break from boxing to tend to mental health issues. But Garcia says he is feeling much better and is now ready to return to the ring.
“I´m back in October,” Ryan explained via Instagram. He also said he plans to fight in Los Angeles. Garcia promised fans, “it`ll be worth the wait.
The last time fans saw Garcia in the ring was in January 2021 against Luke Campbell. Garcia faced early adversity in the fight but went on to stop Campbell in the seventh round. The victory earned Garcia the WBC interim lightweight title.
Ryan Garcia planned to face Javier Fortuna six months later. But Ryan told the boxing world six weeks before the scheduled contest he would be pulling out of the fight due to mental health issues.
Ryan Garcia is once again training under the tutelage of Eddie Reynosa and sharing gym space with three-belt super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. His goal is to recapture the career momentum enjoyed before his mental health break.
Jo Jo Diaz is one possible opponent for Ryan Garcia in October. Diaz replaced Garcia in July and impressed fans with a victory against Fortuna. Diaz now holds the WBC interim belt and is the mandatory challenger for the primary WBC lightweight title.
Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney are also two of the many fighters who expressed a desire to face off against Garcia in the past. Davis fought recently in the super lightweight division and is unlikely to fight as a lightweight in October. Haney has not spoken publicly about either his desire or availability for a Garcia fight in two months.
