Mikey Garcia ready for October fight date

Four division boxing champion Mikey Garcia will fight Sandor Martin On October 16. Organizers have not settled on a fight location, but sources close to the situation say Texas is one possibility.

Roman Gonzalez and Juan Francisco Estrada planned to fight for the third time on October 16. But the 115-pound championship fight was scrapped when Gonzalez tested positive for Covid-19. Promoter Eddie Hearn now plans to stage the Gonzalez-Estrada trilogy fight in November.

Mikey Garcia emerged victorious in 40 of his 41 professional boxing matches. He last fought 19 months ago when he defeated Jesse Vargas at the welterweight weight limit. Garcia sought a fight with former junior welterweight champion Regis Prograis. Garcia was left without an opponent when negotiations with Prograis fell through.

Sandor Martin is a native of Spain who is 38-2 as a professional boxer. Martin fights at the 140-pound division but will face Garcia at a 145 pound catchweight.

The fight against Mikey Garcia will mark the first appearance for Sandor Martin in the United States. His most notable opponent is Anthony Yigit, a fighter who has challenged for world titles in the past. The fight between Martin and Yigit happened in Sweeden.

The saga between Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman Gonzalez began nearly nine years ago at the light flyweight division. Estrada scored a unanimous decision victory over Estrada in the first fight.

The pair met again in March. This time, the men faced off for both the WBA and WBC junior bantamweight titles. Gonzalez got the better of the action and earned a split division victory.

Gonzalez was able to retain his status as the top-ranked junior bantamweight in the world with the rematch victory over Estrada. The now 31-year-old Mexican fighter is now looking to untie his fight series with his rival.
