Jaron Ennis has made it known to all who will listen that he wants to fight for a welterweight title as soon as the opportunity presents itself. But for now, the undefeated prospect will settle for facing off against fighters who have already competed against champions.
Jaron Ennis takes on Thomas Dulorme on Saturday, October 30. Dulorme has already shared the ring with WBA champion Yordenis Ugas and WBO champion Terence Crawford. Ennis’ last two opponents, Sergey Lipinets and Chris Van Heerden, also fought world champions before facing Ennis.
Jaron Ennis receives his training from his father, Derrick. Jaron is the third son trained by his father and is the winner of the Ring Magazine Prospect of the Year award for 2020. But Ennis will tell you that the prize he wants more than anything else is a world championship.
Ennis is number three on the IBF welterweight rankings and is the fifth-ranked fighter by the WBA and WBO. His lowest ranking among the four major organizations is the number six ranking he enjoys with the WBC.
The 24-year-old Jaron Ennis is 27-0 as a professional fighter. He has already knocked out 25 opponents. Some boxing insiders consider “Boots” the best prospect to hail from Philadelphia since Meldrick Taylor. The same insiders say he has skills that rival WBO super featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson.
Jaron Ennis Waiting His Turn
Jaron Ennis is a confident fighter. Boots says the wait for a championship opportunity does not bother him. But he admits he feels he can beat each of the welterweight champions right now.
Ennis also says it does not bother him when other young fighters receive their opportunities a little faster. One example is the chance Teofimo Lopez received at 23 years old to fight Vasiliy Lomachenko, a fighter many fans considered the pound for pound king before Lopez defeated him.
“Everybody has a different route to a championship,” Ennis speaks with a wisdom well beyond his years. “Mine might take longer because I’m going t be on top forever.”
