Errol Spence credits Al Haymon with making a dream of his come true by negotiating a fight with legendary boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao. He says he wanted the fight with Pacquiao for some time. Spence explains that once he expressed his desire to Haymon, “Al got it done.”
Spence also credits Pacquiao for taking the fight against a world champion eleven years his junior. He says that Pacquiao has earned the right to fight anyone he wants. Spence respects the boxing legend for continuing to fight the best of the best.
Spence expressed confidence about his chances against Pacquiao. He understands that some boxing fans believe he showed diminished skills in his last fight against Danny Garcia. Spence says his critics are in for a rude awakening on August 21.
Errol Spence fought Danny Garcia 14 months after a horrific traffic accident threatened to end his life and career. He says his health was about 80 percent for the Garcia matchup.
“I wasn’t right at all,” Spence explains when asked about the days and weeks leading up to his fight with Garcia. The IBF and WBC welterweight champion declined to talk details. But said, “I could write a book,” when asked what was wrong with him going into the fight.
Errol Spence has always been one of the larger welterweights in the division. The welterweight champ explains he is not planning to campaign at the 147-pound weight limit for much longer. He expanded on this thought by saying he may only fight once more in the division after Pacquiao. This information leaves fans to wonder if they will ever see the greatly anticipated matchup between Spence and WBO welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford.
Spence plans to fight one more time in 2021 and says he will try to negotiate a fight with Crawford after he deals with the Manny Pacquiao challenge. Other welterweight possibilities include a rematch with Shawn Porter or a fight with WBA interim champion Yordenis Ugás.
Spence does not rule out the possibility that he will move to 154 immediately following the Pacquiao-Spence clash. However, he is clear that another fight many fans want to see between Spence and former champion Keith Thurman will never happen. “I don’t want nothing to do with Keith Thurman,” Spence chuckled before adding, “that ship has sailed.”
