David Benavidez is more confident than ever that he is the man that will dethrone pound for pound king Canelo Alvarez. But first, Benavidez needs to beat Kyrone Davis Saturday night to solidify his position as the top competitor for the throne.
Some boxing fans and insiders are expressing criticism regarding the opponents Canelo faced in recent fights. This group believes that Canelo has run out of “throw-away” opponents and should face either David Benavidez or Jermall Charlo when he returns to the ring in May.
Benavidez is at the top of the shortlist of fighters the boxing public wants to see in the ring with Canelo. It would be hard for Canelo to convince the public he is not avoiding the undefeated Benavidez if he opts for lesser competition.
David Benavidez is 24-0 with 21 knockouts. The 24-year-old Phoenix native has already held a share of the super-middleweight crown twice. Benavidez lost his title each time due to problems outside the ring.
Benavidez says he is impressed with the performance Canelo turned in against Caleb Plant a week ago. The 11th round TKO victory made Canelo the first undisputed super middleweight champion.
“It was a good performance,” Benavidez commended the man he hopes to fight soon. “What happened was exactly how I predicted.”
David Benavidez: I Have the Tools
Benavidez thinks he has the tools that will make for a much different fight when he faces Canelo. “The fighters that are going to last with Canelo are the ones that have power,” Benavidez says. “You can be defensive all you want, but sooner or later, you are going to get caught. You got to get to him before he gets to you.”
“I’ve got a great jab and some body shots,” Benavidez gets more specific about the tools he will bring into the ring with him if he can get a fight with Canelo. “I’m a combination puncher. I’m hungry, and I want this opportunity.”
A fight between Benavidez and Canelo would be an exciting one for boxing fans. But Benavidez and the rest of the boxing world can now only wait to see who the pound-for-pound king chooses to fight in May.
