David Benavidez recently repeated to the boxing world how much he would like to see Jermall Charlo inside a boxing ring. Benavidez also made it clear he was not impressed by what many in the boxing world saw as a less than stellar performance from Charlo in his last fight against Juan Macias Montiel.
David Benavidez is 24-0 with 21 Knockouts and fights veteran Jose Uzcategui on August 28. Benavidez makes it clear that he is not overlooking Uzcategui. The former WBC Super middleweight champion says Charlo, the current WBC middleweight champion, only makes sense as his next opponent.
The verbal jousting between David Benavidez and Jermall Charlo has taken place for some time now. Benavidez notes that Charlo claims to be only interested in 160-pound fighters when speaking of a Benavidez-Charlo matchup. But Charlo says he wants to fight pound-for-pound superstar Canelo Alvarez at 168.
Benavidez made his feelings regarding the Charlo-Montiel clash known via social media. “I’ll stop dude, I promise,” is the caption attached to an Instagram image from Benavidez showing Charlo between rounds during the Montiel fight. Benavidez also said, “that’s why he ain’t want to fight me.”
Charlo’s performance against Montiel has some boxing insiders questioning if age or other factors are starting to take their toll on the fighter. Others wonder if Charlo underestimated the challenge Montiel would present to him. Jermall Charlo supporters credit Montiel with an inspired effort and say Charlo showed championship grit by thwarting the challenge.
David Benavidez challenges Charlo to fight for the right to challenge Canelo. He points out that he and Charlo have the same promoter and could arrange a fight for an interim title that would put the winner at the front of the line in the Canelo sweepstakes. Boxing fans are awaiting Jermall Charlo’s response to the challenge.
