Canelo Alvarez contemplates move to 175 pound division

Canelo Alvarez is clear on his intentions to unify the 168-pound division. He already has three of the four belts in the division and needs only to defeat Caleb Plant to complete his mission.

Negotiations for a fight between Canelo and Plant are ongoing, but an agreement has yet to become final. The uncertainty regarding the negotiations can become a problem since Canelo plans to fight in September. Both Canelo’s trainer, Eddie Reynoso, and promoter, Eddie Hearn, are beginning to speak about alternatives to Caleb Plant for September.

Eddie Hearn says Canelo Alvarez wants to fight WBC and IBF light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev. Hearn acknowledges that the bigger Beterviev represents a dangerous challenge at 175 pounds. But Hearns also points out, “Canelo is a competitor.”

Artur Beterbiev is 16-0 and has stopped every opponent he has faced so far. Hearns went on to say that the more anyone tries to tell Canelo about the dangers of fighting Beterbiev, the more the Mexican champion will want the fight.

Canelo Alvarez makes it clear that he has no plans of campaigning in the Middleweight division again. But there are still competitive matchups for Canelo at 168.

Many fight fans would love to see Canelo in the ring with David Benavidez. David Benavidez is a young and talented fighter who possesses the size and power to push Canelo to the limit.

Jermall Charlo is a viable Canelo Alvarez opponent if he is willing to move to 168. So far, Charlo says he is only interested in fights at the 160-pound weight limit.

A familiar foe, Gennadiy Golovkin, still wants a third fight with Canelo Alvarez. The 39-year-old former champion has been inactive since losing for the second time to Canelo in 2018. But Golovkin still wants Alvarez in the ring once more.
