Canelo Alvarez already holds three of the four recognized world titles at the 168-pound division. He will now enjoy the opportunity to meet Caleb Plant inside a boxing ring on November 6 for a chance to become the undisputed champion.
Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant were close to signing a deal that would have them in the ring on September 18. But the original fight negotiations fell apart in the 11th hour over undisclosed contract disputes. The present deal ends weeks of negotiations between PBC founder Al Haymon and the Canelo Alvarez camp.
“I am happy to have this fight before me,” Canelo spoke to his fans via social media. “I am going to make history.”
Eddie Reynoso is the head trainer in the Canelo Alvarez camp. Reynoso says the Plant fight will allow the team to complete their primary goal since entering the 168-pound weight division. That goal is to become the first Mexican fighter to unify the division.
Reynoso says that Canelo`s free-agent status and amicable relationship with all the major boxing promoters benefitted him on his journey. “We are going to write history in Mexican and world boxing.”
Canelo Alvarez is 31 years old and has 56 victories in 59 professional fights. His lone loss is to boxing legend Floyd Mayweater Jr., and two of his contests ended with a draw. His message to Plant: “I`m coming, my friend.”
Caleb Plant is undefeated in his 21 professional boxing matches. He recorded 12 knockouts along the way. The Nashville, TN native is 29 years old and has held the IBF Super middleweight belt since defeating Jose Uzcategui in January 2019.
Caleb Plant seems unfazed by the thought of fighting the pound for pound king and is sure he is the man that will become undisputed super middleweight champion on November 6. “His bark is bigger than his bite,” Plant said about Canelo after the first set of fight negotiations fell through.
