Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant fight in doubt

A week ago, it seemed Canelo Alvarez desire to fight for an undisputed championship was close to becoming a reality. But a recent snag at the negotiating table may mean that a fight between Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant will not happen next.

Fight negotiations have been ongoing for weeks, and both sides had agreed in principle on a September 18 fight date. The two camps began to disagree while going over the final details of the contract. After multiple revision requests, negotiations stalled.

Caleb Plant told ESPN during a recent interview that he agreed to contract terms two weeks ago. The IBF super-middleweight champion also voiced his displeasure with negotiation tactics used by the Canelo team.

Caleb Plant says he agreed to a one-sided rematch clause that is only valid if Alvarez loses. He says he also agreed to a 22-foot boxing ring despite the Nevada State Athletic Commission guidelines that call for a 20-foot boxing ring.

Canelo Alvarez will receive the highest guaranteed fight purse of his career if the fight happens. Reports state that he will receive $40 million in guaranteed money in addition to Mexican TV rights. The fighter at the top of most fans pound for pound list is also set to receive a share of the pay-per-view revenue.

Canelo Alvarez has no current ties with any promoters or networks. The fight with Plant would be a big deal for advisor Al Haymon and the PBC. The September 18 fight date is between two other major PPV boxing events. Manny Pacquiao vs. Errol Spence will take place on August 21. Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury will take place on October 9.

There is some hope the fight will still between Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant will happen in September. Two reasons for this optimism are Canelo´s desire to unify a title and his tendency to fight on Mexican Independence Day.

Canelo will likely seek another opponent for September if the fight with Plant falls through. One possibility is a 175-pound title fight against Dmitry Bivol of Russia.
