Caleb Plant does not necessarily enjoy the household name recognition of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. But this fact does not mean the Tennessee native is not just as confident in the belief that he is the best fighter in the world at 168 pounds. Plant says nothing about Canelo’s recent victory against B.J. Saunders caused him to doubt his position.
Caleb Plant sports a 21-0 professional boxing record that includes 12 stoppages. More importantly, he holds the IBF Super Middleweight Championship needed by Canelo to complete his undisputed collection. But Plant has undisputed dreams of his own.
Both men want the fight to happen, and some talk in boxing circles has the showdown scheduled for September. Caleb Plant can only shake his head at the many boxing fans who consider a Canelo victory a foregone conclusion.
Plant watched Canelo take the WBO belt from B.J. Saunders with an eighth-round TKO victory. He congratulated Canelo on the performance but says he had the Mexican superstar up by only one round going into the eighth. Plant says Saunders got caught jumping into a Canelo counterpunch resulting in the stoppage.
Caleb Plant made it clear that he was just as confident in his chances against Canelo after watching the Saunders fight as he was before the contest began. He says nothing he saw during the boxing match caused him to rethink his game plan against Canelo. He also expressed no doubt that he will be the fighter leaving the ring with all four belts when the boxing match between the two champions finally takes place.
Caleb Plant is optimistic about the fight happening soon but declined to speculate on a date. He says that both men covet the undisputed status and that the only way for either of them to achieve this goal is to fight each other.
When speaking of what may happen in the ring against Canelo, Plant says his skills are better than his potential opponent. He says he has more respect for Canelo as a man than he does as a fighter.
The IBF champion points out that he gets hit less than any other super-middleweight fighter and never allows himself to gain excess weight between fights. But most importantly, Caleb Plant says he is completely unafraid of Canelo Alvarez.
“Some guys lose against Canelo before the fight starts,” Plant explains. “That’s not me.” He promises.
