Jaime Mungia ready for title shot

Jaime Mungia knew to expect a tough fight before entering the ring with Gabe Rosado last Saturday night. The 35-year-old Rosado came into the boxing match with 13 losses in his 40 fights but has logged many impressive rounds against top-notch competition.

Rosado held up his end of the bargain and produced a fight for fans to enjoy. But Mungia looked impressive enough against the tough veteran to make most boxing insiders expect a title shot soon.

Rosado’s game plan was simple but effective for much of the fight. He sought to rough up his undefeated opponent from the opening bell. He also wanted to make good on counterpunching opportunities whenever they became available to him.

The first half or so of the fight followed a similar pattern. Mungia used volume punching to control the action. But Rosado would come on strong as the rounds went on. The problem for Rosado is that the judges did not think the combinations and chopping right hands he landed in return were enough to win the highly competitive early rounds.

Gabe Rosado landed a right hand in the eighth round that appeared to hurt his younger opponent. He could not stop Mungia and spent the rest of the fight trying to land another big punch.

Jaime Mungia dominated the last third of the fight. The result was a unanimous decision for the Mexican prospect.

The 25-year-old Mungia is now undefeated in 38 professional fights. He said after the fight that Rosado was everything he imagined he would be, “This was my toughest fight so far.” Mungia also said, “I think it was a great fight that everyone enjoyed.”

When asked what he wants next for his boxing career, Jaime Mungia says, “we’re ready for a world title or elimination bout.”

Jaime Mungia is the number one contender for both the WBO and WBC middleweight championships. Demetrius Andrade is the WBO champion and fights Jason Quigley next Saturday. WBA champion Jermall Charlo has no fight scheduled at this time.
