Anthony Dirrell has already worn the WBC super-middleweight crown twice in his boxing career. The thirty-seven-year-old fighter would like nothing more than a chance to win the title for a third time before hanging his gloves up for good.
Dirrell plans to continue his journey toward a title by turning in a good performance when he fights this Saturday in the co-feature of the Canelo Alvarez-Caleb Plant undisputed clash.
Anthony Dirrell, 33-2-2 with 24 knockouts, will face-off against “Madman” Marcos Hernandez. Dirrell understands his time in the sport is short. He hopes his performance in the ten-rounder will earn him a fight with the winner of the main event.
“I can display what I have to bring to the table for the winner,” Dirrell explains why the fight with Hernandez is a big opportunity for him. “That’s what I want, and hopefully I get it,” Dirrell says before adding, “If not, I’m really considering just hanging it up.”
The last couple of years have been tough for Dirrell as a boxer. His last two fights resulted in a loss and a draw. Dirrell lost his title to David Benavidez in 2019. A bad cut caused him to retire from the boxing match in the ninth round. The pandemic kept Dirrell sidelined for all of 2020.
Anthony Dirrell fought next in February 2021. He faced off against Kyron Davis as part of a WBC elimination tournament. Dirrell and Davis battled to a split draw.
“I think I won the Kyrone Davis fight,” Dirrell explains. “That’s water under the bridge. I’ll just move forward.”
Marcos Hernandez is a hard-nosed veteran from Fresno, California. Hernandez comes into the fight with a professional record of 15-4-2 and has knocked out three opponents.
Marco Hernandez also shared the ring with Kyrone Davis, resulting in a 2017 split decision loss. Hernandez’s last fight was in September when he earned a unanimous decision against previously undefeated Armando Resendiz.
