Rolly Romero bows out of fight with Gervonta Davis

Rolly Romero is officially a no-go for the planned December 5 pay-per-view boxing match against Gervonta “Tank” Davis. A Showtime spokesperson broke the news of Romero’s removal from the fight card to the public. The spokesperson explains the decision happened after several women alleged sexual misconduct on the fighter’s part.

The spokesperson also informed media sources that the December pay-per-event will still take place. Promoters and organizers are working now to solidify an opponent for Davis.

The potential legal problems for Romero began when a group of women used social media to detail the abuse they say they suffered at the boxer’s hands. More women came forward. And it became more unlikely that Romero could maintain his position as a featured fighter in the high-profile pay-per-view event.

Gervonta Davis and Rolly Romero Feud Unsettled

The decision to remove Romero from the event means the feud between Davis and Romero remains as is. The fighters might settle the dispute inside the ring at a later date. Romero took a moment to address the public via a prepared statement after learning he was no longer fighting Davis.

Romero maintains his innocence. He explains, “It is in the best interest of everyone involved that I do not participate in the upcoming pay-per-view event.” Romero also says, “I will return to the ring as soon as possible after clearing my name.”

Gary Russel Jr. and Isaac Cruz are two fighters considered for replacements. Cruz is the front runner for the appointment at this time.

Gervonta Davis knocked out the bigger Mario Barrios the last time he was in the ring. The comeback victory against the former WBA secondary junior welterweight titleholder raised Davis’ boxing record to 25-0 with 24 knockouts. Davis also holds the WBA secondary title for the lightweight division.

Rolly Romero is 14-0 as a professional with 12 credited knockouts. The fight with Tank would have been the biggest of his young career.
