Boxing fans fed up with the constant date changes for the Teofimo Lopez-George Kambosos showdown may soon find relief. DAZN says the fight will happen at New York’s Hulu theater on November 27.
Teofimo Lopez-George Kambosos was set for June when the first of several issues resulted in a new fight date. After four months of problems, Triller, the fight’s original promoter, backed out of the event. The Triller withdrawal opened the door for DAZN to step in and schedule Lopez’s first fight as a lightweight champion.
Teofimo Lopez will step into the ring for his next fight with a record of 16-0 with 12 knockouts. The boxing match with Kambosos is the first fans will see of Lopez since he defeated Vasiliy Lomachenko to win the WBA, WBO, and IBF lightweight titles. The career-defining win against Lomachenko happened a year ago.
George Kambosos Jr. is 19-0 as a professional boxer with ten credited knockouts. Kambosos became the mandatory challenger for Lopez’s IBF belt by defeating Lee Selby. The Kambosos-Selby clash also happened a year ago.
Joseph Markowski, executive vice-president for DAZN, says the company is excited to take over the championship showdown between the two undefeated fighters. “Lopez is a superstar in the sport of boxing,” Markowski explains. “Kambosos is a tough competitor and a real test for the champion.”
A win against Kambosos may lead to a battle for undisputed glory against the only other man to hold a share of the lightweight title, Devin Haney. But many boxing fans feel the right course of action for Teofimo Lopez is to grant a rematch to Vasiliy Lomachenko.
George Kambosos warns Teofimo Lopez and boxing fans that he plans to leave New York City with three championship belts. “I will shock the world and be crowned lightweight champion on November 27.”
