The Teofimo Lopez-George Kambosos fight is officially on again. Lopez will defend his lightweight titles against Kambosos on October 4 at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu theater.
Past Teofimo Lopez-George Kambosos fight dates were set multiple times throughout the summer. A series of events, beginning with a positive Covid test for Lopez, caused numerous delays with the fight.
Teofimo Lopez was able to seize the attention of the entire boxing world in October 2020 with an upset victory against Vasyl Lomachenko. The victory earned the new champion the WBO, WBA, and IBF lightweight titles. He will defend his titles for the first time against Kambosos.
George Kambosos has also not fought since the last quarter of 2020. His last outing resulted in a split decision win against Lee Selby last Halloween.
The two fighters will have a lot at stake once finally climbing into the ring to do battle. Three world titles are on the line, as well as the opportunity to solidify a position in the red hot lightweight division.
A victory or good showing from either fighter will likely result in future lucrative fight opportunities. Ryan Garcia, Gervonta Davis, and Devin Hany are some of the big names in the division.
The back and forth between the two fighters has been just as hot at times. Kambosos became frustrated when learning of Lopez’s positive Covid test. The Aussie did not mince words when voicing his frustration.
“Pure irresponsibility on your whole side,” Kambosos said to Lopez after learning of the diagnosis. “Your actions and decisions have not only affected our fight but everyone involved with this fight.”
Lopez balked when he learned of a plan from fight promoters to move the boxing match to Australia. At one point, the three-belt champion threatened to pull out the fight altogether.
The good news for boxing fans is the long-awaited fight is now less than a month from fruition. The fighters will appreciate the opportunity to finally trade punches instead of social media jabs.
