Fans disappointed when negotiations for a September matchup between Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant broke down may have a reason for optimism. Recent reports suggest talks between the two camps are now ongoing for a fight in November.
Canelo Alvarez entered fight negotiations with WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol after talks with Plant ended the first time. The pound for pound superstar likes to fight in September. He tried to reach an agreement with Bivol to preserve his September 18 fight date. Canelo gave up on a September fight when he could not secure the boxing match with Bivol.
Eddie Reynoso Jr. is Canelo´s trainer. Reynosa says that Caleb Plant, Dmitry Bivol, and Gennady Golovkin are all potential opponents for Canel´s next fight. The trainer also informed the boxing world the fight will take place at the end of October or mid-November.
Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant have already agreed on most contract issues. The thought from both camps is that the additional time may make it possible to resolve minor disagreements.
Gennady Golovkin fights Ryan Murata for the WBA middleweight championship in December. This fact reduces the number of fighters on Reynoso´s list of potential opponents to two.
Many people in the boxing world believe that Bivol represents a stiffer challenge to Canelo than Plant. But a victory against Plant will allow Canelo to complete his stated mission of unifying the super middleweight division.
Canelo could fight Bivol and then move down to the super middleweight division again to fight Caleb Plant. But the Mexican superstar could find it difficult to lose the weight he will need to gain to fight Bivol.
David Benavidez Jr. may also land a fight with Plant if Canelo Alvarez doesn´t fight the current IBF champion next. Most boxing insiders agree that unifying the super middleweight division against Benavidez would be a stiffer challenge for Canelo.
