Present reports suggest that Canelo Alvarez will soon fight to become the undisputed super middleweight champion of the world. Alvarez currently holds the WBA, WBC, and WBO division championships. He needs to get IBF champion Caleb Plant in the ring for a chance at the final belt.
Previous reports stated negotiations for a Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant fight were not going well. But sources close to the situation now report the two camps are in the closing stages of the negotiations process. September 18 is the target date for the boxing match.
Alvarez is a champion in four weight classes and is believed by many to be the top pound-for-pound boxer in the world. A victory over Plant will make him the first four-belt undisputed champion ever in the super middleweight division.
Canelo Alvarez has already fought twice in 2021. He defended his WBC title against Avni Yildirim in February. Canelo won the fight when Yildirim decided not to leave his corner to begin the fourth round.
Canelo returned to the ring in May to face Billy Joe Saunders. The championship fight took place before a record crowd at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas. Saunders retired before the ninth round after suffering a broken orbital bone.
Caleb Plant is 21-0 with 12 knockouts and is not as well-known as Canelo. But Plant fans feel he is more than a worthy opponent. The smooth and crafty style used by the athletic Tennessee native earned him the nickname “Sweet Hands.”
The 29-year-old champion first tasted championship success with a 2019 unanimous decision victory over Jose Uzcategui. Caleb Plant has three successful title defenses under his belt. His last fight was the headliner of a January fight card held at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles.
The fight between Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant will reportedly pay both men the highest fight purses of their careers. The winner of the fight will also make boxing history.
