Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the last 147-pound fighter Ring Magazine saw fit to reward with its prestigious championship. But this fact will change on August 21 when Manny Pacquiao and Errol Spence climb through the ropes for battle.
The winner of the blockbuster matchup will earn the Ring Magazine welterweight championship. Spence is already putting the WBC and IBF titles up for grabs. The list of all-time greats to become Ring Magazine welterweight champions include Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, and Sugar Ray Robinson.
The Ring Magazine most often makes its championships available when a number one ranked fighter faces the second-ranked contender in a division. In this case, Spence is the topped rank welterweight, and Pacquiao is rated number three.
Magazine policy stipulates that a number one and number three can fight for the belt when the number two ranked fighter is unavailable. All three voting members of The Ring editorial board agreed that Manny Pacquiao was a worthy contender for The Ring belt.
“Pacquiao is an all-time great,” managing editor Tom Gray explains. He has “fought the best for two decades.”
“Errol Spence is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world today,” Gray assessed the talent on the other side of the ring. “May the best man win.”
Manny Pacquiao has 62 victories in his 71 professional fights. The 42-year-old ended 39 of his boxing matches by knockout.
Pacquaio is a past Ring belt holder in three divisions. An upset against the younger Errol Spence will allow the boxing legend from the Philippines to make history once more.
Errol “The Truth” Spence is undefeated in his 27 professional fights with 21 wins by stoppage. The Truth is looking to add Manny Pacquiao to an already impressive list of victories. The list includes Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia, Kell Brook, and Mikey Garcia.
