Gervonta Davis looking for next opponent

The boxing world is still abuzz with memories of Gervonta Davis’ 11th round stoppage of former junior welterweight world champion Mario Barrios. The victory makes “Tank” an active titleholder at the junior lightweight, lightweight, and junior middleweight divisions. He is also one of the biggest box-office attractions the sport has to offer.

Boxing fans cannot get enough of the young superstar and are eagerly awaiting his next bout. We took a moment to explore some of the fight options that may currently be on the table for Davis.

Gervonta Davis vs. Josh Taylor

Josh Taylor made his feelings regarding the WBA regular welterweight championship belt for which Davis challenged Barrios known before the two men stepped into the ring. Taylor called the belt a “Mickey Mouse title” and says, “there is only one champion at light-welterweight.”

Taylor holds all four major belts at the 140-pound limit and represents the cream of the crop for the division. The list of fighters he has already defeated includes Regis Prograis and Jose Ramirez.

Gervonta Davis would face a height and reach disadvantage against Taylor similar to the one he overcame in his fight with Barrios. But if Tank can fight on the inside against Taylor, he can move near the top of everyone’s pound-for-pound list and become the undisputed light welterweight champion of the world.

Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia

The back and forth between Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis has gone on seemingly forever. Garcia said recently that Gervonta Davis is the only fight that interests him at the moment. Davis adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, is also on record saying that a Davis-Garcia matchup would be the biggest fight in the sport.

Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia are promoted by Floyd Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya, respectively. The promoters may have reservations about putting the two young superstars in the ring together at this point in their careers. But the money available for everyone involved may cause this fight to happen sooner rather than later.

Once in the ring, Garcia will need to use his size and hand speed to break down Davis. But one mistake will provide Tank with an opportunity to detonate a bomb that could instantly end the contest.

Gervonta Davis vs. Regis Prograis

Regis Prograis congratulated Gervonta Davis on his knockout victory against Mario Barrios. He also issued a stern warning to Tank. Prograis said Davis logged a “solid fight against a solid opponent.” He then challenged him to face the “real dawg at 140.”

Regis Prograis is another fighter who would enjoy a significant size advantage over Davis. Prograis is also a more dynamic fighter that can do more things in the ring than Barrios could at 140. Both the risk and reward presented to Davis would be extremely high if he faced Regis Prograis in his next boxing match.

Gervonta Davis vs. Mikey Garcia

Mikey Garcia made it known before the Davis-Barrios matchup that he would be interested in a fight with the winner. Some boxing fans are now talking about a potential megafight between the two multi-weight champions.

Both Davis and Garcia fight under the PBC banner, so this fight may be easier to make than others on this list. Garcia possesses good timing and has more experience on the big stage.

Davis is known as a superior physical talent. He showed the world while fighting Barrios he has grit and determination to go with the talent. A Davis Garcia matchup would be a classic fight between a fighter with one-punch KO power and a precision counterpuncher capable of winning a 12 round war.

Gervonta Davis vs. Jose Ramirez

Gervonta Davis could choose Jose Ramirez as his next opponent if the goal is to grow his profile at the 140-pound division. Ramirez would enjoy about a five-inch advantage for both reach and height. The former champion has also shown he can punch with power in the past.

A fight between Davis and Ramirez would include more than enough fireworks for fans. It is also unlikely to last 12 rounds.

Gervonta Davis vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko

Vasiliy Lomachenko defeated Masayoshi Nakatani to show he is still among the top fighters in the 135-pound division. And while Lomachenko is anxious for a second chance at Teofimo Lopez, he has spoken in the past about sharing the ring with Gervonta Davis.

Some Davis team members say they are no longer interested in Lomachenko, but Davis is not one of them. Gervonta Davis is on record more than once saying that he would welcome a PPV showdown with ‘The Matrix.’

Gervonta Davis makes it clear that he trusts his team to continue picking the best fights for him. He also wants the world to know he has no problems fighting whoever wants to share the ring with him. Time will tell who his team selects as the next opponent. But it is a foregone conclusion that the entire boxing world will be watching the next time Tank steps into the ring.
