Jermall Charlo

Undefeated WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo used social media to voice his displeasure with former pound-for-pound great Oscar De La Hoya. The problem for Charlo began when De La Hoya referenced the middleweight champion while making critical comments regarding Canelo Alvarez.

De La Hoya is the former promoter for Alvarez and recently criticized the Mexican superstar for not fighting top competition. Jermall Charlo is one of the fighters De La Hoya says Canelo is avoiding.

Charlo began his response with a message to Oscar to “keep my name out your mouth.” The middleweight champion then accused both Canelo and his former promoter of ducking him for years.

Many observers believed Charlo’s response to be counterproductive to his own best interests. After all, De La Hoya seemed to be campaigning for a big payday and a chance at pound-for-pound greatness for Charlo.

The problem for Charlo seemed to be the timing of De La Hoya’s comments. Charlo feels De La Hoya is only speaking up about Canelo’s choice of opponents because he is no longer promoting his fights. The eldest of the Charlo twins takes exception to Oscar wielding his name as a weapon against Canelo.

Charlo questioned De La Hoya’s Mexican heritage and accused the promoter of engineering his brother’s only loss. He also called De La Hoya a bum and commented on the personal issues that have plagued the superstar’s post-boxing life.

Jermall Charlo and his twin brother, Jermell, have a history with Oscar De La Hoya of their own. The brothers did business with De La Hoya’s Golden Boy promotions as young fighters. Neither brother was happy with the outcome of that business arrangement.

The Charlo’s would go on to sign with the PBC after severing ties with Golden Boy. Both Charlo’s were able to grow their careers under Al Haymon’s tutelage.

Charlo offered De La Hoya a shot at his WBC title at one point during his expletive-laced attack. He also expressed interest in a fight against Canelo at the 160-pound weight limit. The boxing match with Canelo at middleweight is unlikely since the Mexican superstar now campaigns at 168.
