Canelo Alvarez exploded on former promoter Oscar De La Hoya via social media recently as the relationship between the two men continues to grow worse. The latest chapter happened after De La Hoya responded to an Instagram video of Canelo working with a young boxer on his fundamentals.
Oscar De La Hoya suggested that the WBO, WBA, and WBC super-middleweight champion was the wrong person to be speaking boxing fundamentals to the young fighter. De la Hoya then pointed out the flaws in Canelo’s fundamentals, saying the champion throws hooks from a flat-footed position with his head up and weight on his heels. De La Hoya also accused Canelo of avoiding a fight with Jermall Charlo.
Canelo Alvarez is fresh off an eighth-round stoppage of Billy Joe Saunders. He also showed he was not too fond of De la Hoya’s critique of his boxing skills or the suggestion that he was avoiding a tough fight.
Alvarez called De La Hoya a traitor and gave a subtle warning of what could happen if he spoke his mind. He rounded out the response with emojis and expletives.
The two men once worked together to make Canelo Alvarez one of the most popular boxers in the sport. The chain of events leading to their fallout began when Canelo and De La Hoya’s Golden Boy boxing promotions decided to join efforts with DAZN boxing for an 11-fight deal. Canelo asked for a release from the agreement when he said DAZN and Golden Boy showed themselves unable to secure good fights for him.
Oscar De La Hoya admits that he lost sight of advice veteran promoter Bob Arum gave to him when he first decided to try his own hand at promoting fights. “Don’t ever make it personal,” was the advice from Arum. De La Hoya says the situation with Canelo grew personal, and it hurt his feelings when the Mexican superstar said he no longer wanted to fight under the Golden Boy banner.
The current situation has no doubt grown personal for Canelo Alvarez also. The super-middleweight champion commented previously that his former promotor put more effort into partying than maintaining his company. Canelo also alluded to the drug and alcohol problems that have affected Oscar De La Hoya for much of his life after boxing.
